Summer Camp 2007
True to ourselves, we had new programs and new experiences again in this year’s summer camp. Each year, based on previous experience, we develop new ideas and new format to make our time together memorable. As a result, the teachers and the children truly enjoyed the programs.
The mornings were spent indoors, this year at the facilities of the Catholic Parish. Our indoor activities were educational and spiritual which we made fun by practical hands-on activities. The morning prayers were led not only by our pastor and reverend, but also by parents to show the children that faith resides in all of us and it can be shared with everyone.
We became so close to our guest Anna Panti teacher and opera singer (Link to Anna Panti) from last year (Link to 2006 Summer Camp), that we decided to invite her again. Anna assisted in our musical, arts & crafts and literacy programs through the story of Janos Vitez by Sandor Petofi. With her assistance, the children created a musical play and performed it to a large audience on Saturday with great success.
After our spiritual and educational activities, with the assistance of two seasoned educators, the children learned to knit, weave, make candles and practiced other traditional craftsmanship. Parents and grandparents helped to make sure everyone masters the techniques, which created a warm family atmosphere four our morning activities.
After lunch, we moved our programs outdoors mostly in the form of field trips. We took a horse drawn carriage tour through Stanley Park; mastered an obstacle course in Central Park; swam in Sasamat Lake; took the Waterbus to Granville Island where we visited the Model Ships and Model Trains Museums; and we went to Telus World of Science to test scientific principles with hands on experimentation.
Our weekday programs were open to kids over eight years of age, but on the weekend we organized activities where everyone between 0 and 100+ could participate. We started the Saturday with circle games after which we could watch the anxiously awaited puppet show about Janos Vitez produced and performed by the older children and Anna Panti. Anna brought her prettiest theatrical gowns all the way from Hungary for the occasion. After a lunch and a visit to the park, the little ones were immersed in the puppet show on Snow White performed by professionals and parents with the help of some older children. The large puppets used in this show were donated by the Vaskakas Puppet Theater (Link to Summer Camp 2005).
We spent Sunday afternoon in Hume Park where we set up an obstacle course and a picnic for everyone who wanted to participate. We closed the camp knowing that we learned from each other and we would like to spend times like this together many times in the future. We would like to thank everyone who participated in making the camp a great success!
