Levels of the Hungarian language exam
The Hungarian as a second language exam can be taken on five levels, all of which - with the exception of Junior level - are designed in accordance with the ALTE (Association of Language Testers in Europe) and therefore with the guiding principles of the European Council. The Hungarian as a second language exams are internationally recognized by ALTE.
All examination levels have 3 types and the candidate can choose whether he/she wants to do the written exam only , the oral exam only or to take a "complete" exam (combined written and oral exam). On the oral exam, speaking and listening comprehension are measured, while on the written exam writing skills and reading comprehension are evaluated. Upon a successful exam the candidate will receive an official document about his/her knowledge in Hungarian as a second language.
The lower intermediate, intermediate and advanced level exams are recognized by the Republic of Hungary, accredited by all Hungarian Universities, as well as by some Universities in Europe and Canada; and high school credits can be obtained in most public high schools in the Metro Vancouver area.
Junior level*: This exam is mainly recommended to kids between ages 10-14 who have learned the Hungarian language for at least 200 hours and are interested in finding out their knowledge level. Basic level* (Level A2): This exam assesses how well the candidate can meet the most basic communication demands of everyday life. Type of exam: oral, written or combined. Age requirement: 14 years and up. For more info on waystage user level exam, click here.
Lower intermediate level (Level B1): Accredited exam. This exam assesses whether the candidate can meet the basic communication demands of everyday life and whether they can create and maintain social, cultural and work relationships at a basic level in a Hungarian language environment. Intermediate level (Level B2): Accredited exam. This exam assesses whether the candidate can create and maintain social, cultural and work relationships in a complex way and using the appropriate language in a Hungarian language environment. Type of exam: oral, written or combined. Age requirement: 14 years and up. For more info on independent user level exam, click here.
Advanced level (Level C1): Accredited exam. This exam assesses whether the candidate can approximate the linguistic and cultural performance of native speakers in a Hungarian language environment. The candidate must have a sophisticated vocabulary, a rich variety of stylistic apparatus and must be familiar with different language registers. Type of exam: oral, written or combined. Levels A2, B1, B2, C1 are internationally recognized levels as determined by the European Council.
* Please note that the Junior and Basic levels are currently not accredited. The Junior level is only available for children between the ages of 10 and 14 and serves as a good indicator on how the child's language skills are progressing and it's a great way for the child to experience and get familiar with these types of exams. The Basic level exam can be taken from the age of 14 and it serves as a solid entry level into the accredited examination system
